Sharing my tips for autumn wellbeing

After a fantastic summer and an inspirational week of intensive CPD with my teacher Jason Crandell, I'm delighted to be back to teaching consistently.

Now the clocks have gone back and our nervous system is shocked into winter by the dark cold nights, it's important to spend time stoking your inner energy. Autumn may be the prelude to winter, but it's also a time of energising seasonal change — a metaphor for our own personal development. The golden leaves and red rose-hips show Mother Nature preparing to draw inward, re-energise, root back into her centre before sprouting new growth.

Healthy lifestyles can be yet another thing that there doesn't seem time for, but it only takes a moment to...

  1. Go outside for 5 minutes whenever you see sunshine
  2. Eat a rainbow of colours for more vitamins and minerals
  3. Take a vitamin D supplement
  4. When someone asks "How are you?" Choose to tell them "fantastic, awesome, happy" — it will energise you both
  5. Snack on nuts and not cakes or biscuits — sugar makes you feel sluggish
  6. Drink more water
  7. Book into a yoga class
  8. Have an early night with a book rather than TV
  9. Tape your mouth up with micropore when asleep — nasal breathing helps stave off colds
  10. Have 5 nights a week without any alcohol

In November we're onto skill 5: transferring weight. Knowing how to transfer your weight is critical to achieving graceful transitions between poses and forms the essence of vinyasa styles of yoga.

Wherever your journey leads you, take your yoga practice with you for it will serve you well.
